FIBER FOR SALE

Drin Becker's winning fleeces

Welcome to the fiber sales at Royal Fibers. Take a minute to browse the many fibers we feature here. Come back often, as I will be adding fibers and handspun yarns periodically. If you do not see exactly what you want, do not hesitate to contact me at dcarpio@onramp113.org, and ask. I will see what I can do to produce or find what you are looking for.

It is our desire to provide a source for exotic fibers for the spinner and fiber artist. We will search the world over for luxery fibers for your (and my!) spinning pleasure. Some of these fibers are also produced right here on our farm, or at my sister's farm down the road.

ALPACA

Alpaca is just about my favorite fiber to spin and knit. I love the 22 natural colors, and the way it takes dye. I also love its warmth, light handle and the way it drapes. I carry Alpaca in raw form, washed and fluffed into a cloud, and roving. Small quanities of yarn may be available from time to time.

Raw Alpaca:
This is typically the entire fleece from the Alpaca, and may contain some leg and belly hair, though I was told it was blanket when I got it. Alpacas do like to roll in the dirt to keep their fleeces free of insects, so there will always be vegetative matter, dust and dirt in a raw fleece, unless the animals are coated year around (these were not). Usually most except for the largest twigs will fall out during spinning. The best part of the fleece is the blanket, also known as "firsts". Seconds would include the soft but shorter neck hair, some leg and belly. Thirds would be leg and belly hair which is coarser, and often stained or really dirty.

Fawn Alpaca
Fawn - $3.00.oz
This is a large fleece that is just dreamy soft and appears to be fairly clean. I have not opened it up completely, but supect that there could be some seconds in this fleece.

Black Alpaca
Black - $2.50.oz
I bought this fleece from Rachael, a black cria, from a ranch in Southern California. There is quite a bit of VM in this fleece, but most seems to drop out during spinning. Some bits of hay do need to be picked out. It is a blanket fleece and Oh SO soft!

White Alpaca
White - $2.00.oz
This is a whole fleece with the usual VM and dirt, and leg, neck and belly hair included.

Silver Grey Alpaca
Silver Grey - $1.50.oz
Silver and grey fleeces tend to be a little more course than white and fawn. This is the case with this fleece. It includes a range of colors from light to dark grey, and white. This appears to be from a "tuxedo" silver grey. Still softer than most sheep's wool, this would still make nice outer wear with the characteristic Alpaca drape.

Silver Grey Alpaca
Silver Grey - $1.50.oz
This fleece is very much like the one above.

Mahogany Alpaca
Mahogany Red - $1.50.oz

Washed Alpaca Cloud:
This is typically Alpaca fleece which I recieved raw and washed and fluffed.

White Alpaca Cloud
White - $2.00/oz This is a lovely cria fleece which I recieved raw and washed and fluffed. It spins like a dream right from the cloud!

Rebecca
Creamy white - $1.25/oz
Rebecca is one of my sister's lambs out of her 1/2 Merino ram and Sarah, the suffolk whose fleece is listed below. Her fleece is creamy white, has a softer, more open crimp than the Suffolks, and takes dyes beautifully. Her wool would be great for making warm, soft socks, sweaters or jackets.

COLUMBIA CROSS

Junior was a surprise lamb out of one of my sister's first bottle lambs, Rachael. His fleece is creamy white, crimpy, and takes dyes beautifully. I have used his wool to make warm soft socks.

SUFFOLK

Sarah
Creamy white - $1.25/oz
Sarah was one of my sister's first bottle lambs, and the mother or grandmother of the Suffolk Cross lambs whose fleeces follow. Her fleece is creamy white, crimpy, and takes dyes beautifully. I have used her wool to make warm bouncy socks. Sarah passed over the rainbow bridge this year, so this will be the last of her wool available.
